Backup TrueCrypt Containers

Postby vince77 on Tue Apr 19, 2011 10:00 am

Hi -

I would like to backup encrypted file containers whose size never changes, but the data inside the encrypted container does. Would it be possible to use the partial file updating feature or would i have to use the copy only files with the Archive flag? I am basically copying the file container itself.

Yes you can use Partial File Updating as well as the following checkmark, on the tab sheet Comparison->More:

Always copy the files, even if timestamp unchanged.

It will have to read in the complete source file to look for changed blocks, so you may want to do this at fixed times or intervals rather than continuously. It's not possible in real time.

Great thank you.

so I don't have to check off the Binary Comparison of existing files?

No, binary comparison is not recommended.

My initial backup was successful.

the last couple backups say successful, but what I don't understand is why only 1 of the 300GB files are being backed up? Attached are copies of the 1st and last log file and my profile.

Looks perfect. The Partial File Updating causes only those blocks to be copied which have changed. So, only 1 of 300 GB have changed. That's great.
