Can Linux version run without X Window?

Postby Ivangelion on Thu May 05, 2011 4:06 am

Hello,

We've deployed SFFS on one of our production servers and are now trying to use it on Linux servers without X Windows -- only consoles. Is this doable? If yes, how?

If not, can this be done by setting profiles on the 3rd server, i.e. another Windows-based server to remotely control 2 Linux servers with Samba, and sync them using UNC path?

Thanks.

Hello,

at this time, there is only one executable for Linux available and it requires X Windows. So you would need to run it on a GUI machine, either Linux or MS Windows, and copy the files via LAN. In the Windows version, you can use UNC paths. The Linux version can only access network paths if they have been mounted in the root file system.

OK Thanks. I think I will try to install SFFS on Windows to sync both Linux servers via UNC paths, since we do not want to install X Window on Linux.

Yes it can, sort of. You do need a little bit of X, but it does not have to be running - See my post here:

it would be very very nice to have a version for linux that does not require other but a conf file . maybe on the mac or win version have an option to export to linux config file so you just place it and reload config on linux
