Clearing out old backup files

Postby rexwithers on Wed Apr 20, 2016 2:15 am

You have mentioned in a few posts that you can simulate this in Syncovery by:

“To delete older files, you need to mirror an empty folder to the destination using Exact Mirror Mode and choose the File Age filter: Over X Days old.”

It works but there appears to be **fundamental problem** with this see this oversimplified situation:

If I have a file that was 2 years ago but not modified since then
Every night I sync and have things setup to copy deleted files into the “older” folder
The modify date on the backup the file will also be 2 years ago (as it hasn’t been edited and “re” backed up since as the syncovery sees that there is no need)
Hypothetically I run the profile you suggested above and this deletes anything in my “older” folder older than (say) a year, let’s call this the “cleanup profile”

Tomorrow someone deletes the 2 year old file and it gets moved to the older folder tomorrow night (As expected; in case it needs to get restored)
The following day I run the clean-up profile and it deletes everything with a time stamp over 1 year which includes my 2 year old file (based on the original backup date not the delete date) and its gone forever.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Yes that is correct. You can only run the clean-up script if you know that nobody needs any of the files.
