Delta sync

Postby chrfal on Thu Feb 10, 2011 8:21 am

Hi!

This software is new to me. So here is a question!

What parameters should I use to set up synchronization for block-level delta? I do not want to replace an entire file with the newer file, I just want to copy or update the blocks that are added or those that have changed.

Is this possible with Superflexible? And can you tell me which boxes I should check?

Yes it supports this. It is under versioning and then synthetic backups. It works very well. Please keep in mind, not all files are good candidates for synthetic backups. Usually large files such as database files are best with this.

Slight correction: the standard block-level copying is under Special->Partial File Updating. It is documented here:

http://www.superflexible.com/partial.htm

The other feature, "Synthetic Backup", is an extension of Partial File Updating which keeps the daily differential blocks in separate zip files. It combines zipping, partial file updating, and versioning. There is some preliminary documentation about it here:

Hi again

When I´m testing "Mode 1" under partial updating it seems as if superflexible, rather than simply update the blocks that have changed , copy the entire file.

Is this correct?

You will not see any difference while it is copying. However the log file contains statistics at the end about copying MBs saved due to partial file updating. It will also mention why partial file updating may not have been used for each file.

You may not notice any speed improvement unless the connection to the destination is really slow. If you copy from one hard drive to another, it may not make any speed difference at all.
