Filename Encoding

Postby iconbill on Sun Oct 17, 2010 4:19 am

i'm having problems with 'filename encoding', so first a short conclusion, please tell me if i am right!

my summary:
I understand that it's better to enable the option 'Filename Encoding' because:
- if you are using 'versioning', then the Restore Wizard can only understand files if this option was enabled
- in the case you are using ftp, this option would be very save, so there will be never problems comparing files (time comparing)

additional problems when enable this option:
- the filepath on the target could be to long, because in each filename extra text is added. this could give some errors. then i have to make the source path shorter.

question 1:
My conclusion was: 'always enable filename encoding!', so i checked the profile, and the option 'filename encoding' was not enabled, but still all the files (zipped) looks like this:
'orgfilename.d20101010-u194104.txt.s352.zip'

question 2:
when i check the option 'filename encoding' the 'move into the folder' option is disabled?
I wish i could get some live feedback after i check the 'filename encoding', because now i do not understand why the program is helping me.

question 3:
is it possible to change this option (filename encoding) after a full sync was done? I was thinking this option can only be set when you have a empty target (first sync).

question 4:
i was trying the restore wizard, but i would like to browse to my archive and view from one file, all the previous versions, then select restore an older version. I see it's only possible to restore at least a folder. Is there no wizard (or manual) 'how to restore wizard single file?'

thank you for your great support!
Kind regards,

You do not have to use Filename Encoding. Only if you want.

In the latest version 5.x, the timestamps can be preserved with many FTP servers. It depends on the server.

the option 'filename encoding' was not enabled, but still all the files (zipped) looks like this:
'orgfilename.d20101010-u194104.txt.s352.zip'

Zipped files always get the .sxxx. encoding because that is the original file size, so the program knows what's in the zip file. The timestamp is only added if you have Filename Encoding on, or Synthetic Backup, or Partial File Updating. All these imply filename encoding.

when i check the option 'filename encoding' the 'move into the folder' option is disabled?

Yes. All encoded versions are kept in the same folder.

is it possible to change this option (filename encoding) after a full sync was done?

Yes. The program can handle a mix of encoded and non-encoded files in the same backup.

view from one file, all the previous versions

You need to finish the Restore Wizard and let it come up with the list of files that can be restored. There you can choose the files that you want. By right-clicking you can choose the version that you want.

In the last step of the Wizard, you can choose if all appropriate files should be marked for restoring automatically. Turn that off if you only need one file, and then choose it in the Sync Preview.

thank you Super Fast Forum Superman !

Timestamp:
i do not have enabled:
- Filename Encoding
- Synthetic Backup
- Partial File Updating

i see something strange:
When i run profile in attended mode it says: 'synthetic backup does not support the detection of renamed files'.
but this message must not appear because i 'synthetic backup' was not enabled!

and because i enabled 'detect renamed files' , also the timestamp is added?
(this option was not in your previous post)

maybe you could add in the future in the 'files' information screen like:
'timestamp in files will be used because etcccc (reasons)
Now i have to do run the profile to see the output.

but but the main problem i'm having with all the options links to each other:

i need some more interaction information when something changes automatically in other invisible screens.

example: when i enable 'use partial file updating' then 'synthetic backup' will be enabled in other (invisible!) screen/tab.

and when i disabled 'synthetic backups', the 'use partial file' option is disabled, without my knowledge :(

i think there are even more settings changing after i enabled/disable something.

Now i have no clue the impact when i change some settings. The program is telling me nothing. You know all the links between the option, but i also want to know :)
Kind regards,

Hi,

the documentation for Synthetic Backup is not finished yet. Synthetic Backup is the combination of zipping, versioning, filename encoding, and partial file updating. For example if you go to the tab sheet Special and choose Partial File Updating and you are also using zipping, that means you are using Synthetic Backup.

If problems remain, you can click on the "Defaults" button that resets all these options and then you can choose the zipping again. Alternatively, you can send the profile to me by removing the FTP password and then exporting it from the profile overview (via right-click).
