Hyper-V Server Backups

Postby QSS-Support on Thu Sep 09, 2010 10:56 pm

Hi,

We would like to backup running Hyper-V Guest Virtual Machines from the Host level using SFFS. If this could be included as a feature as well, it would really be good. It might well be able to do so already, but we're just not sure how SFFS handles VSS.

Hyper-V servers has VSS Writers that can communicate with the Hyper-V Integration tools installed into supported Guest VMs to trigger VSS within those VMs so that the running VMs are in a state suitable for backup at the host level. Not knowing enough about VSS or specifically how SFFS works with VSS, we don't know if the current version of SFFS can reliably backup the running Hyper-V VMs or not.

We have tested that SFFS can backup the running VM folders (treating it like any standard open file). However, we need to also be sure that it is calling the Hyper-V VSS writer appropriately so that the VMs that are being copied are in suitable states for backup.

Can anyone confirm that it calls the right VSS writers to achieve this at the moment with any special changes or settings or do we need to wait for this to be incorporated into a new version of SFFS ?

Thanks.

Hello,

you can select the VSS writer under "Advanced VSS Settings" but since the program is file-based, I believe it still treats the files like any other open files. This feature needs to be completed in a future version.
