licensing question

Postby Jack on Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:07 pm

I have a question regarding the remote service.

Say I have a computer and one license for superflexible. I want to run superflexible on one machine which pulls files from a server onto itself via a LAN. I also want to push the files onto another remote computer at another location. Do I need one license or two?

The program will only be running on one computer with the remote service on another. I can't seem to find an answer to this question.

One license is sufficient (Professional). With a Single User license, you can run the main program on one computer at a time and use the ExtremeSync Remote Service on three other machines.

That's good news for me. :D

I'm a little unsure about how it works. I am trying to connect over the Internet. Do I need to open a specific port on the firewall?

The connectivity is not provided by our software. So you'd need to use an FTP or SSH server or create a VPN. Yes for FTP and SSH you need to ports on the Firewall.

As an FTP server you could use the IIS that comes with Windows Professional, or if you want a little better server you can use G6 FTP server from www,gene6.com. Alternatively, as an SSH server you could use WinSSHD from http://www.bitvise.com/winsshd.html.

VPNs are also great, you would probably want to set one up in the Internet (VPN) routers if you have such devices. Then you don't need FTP or SSH.

So what you're saying is that I cannot use the remote service in this way then? Do I use the remote service over FTP or SSH? A VPN is not an option at this point.

I already have it set up using FTP but if I can use the remote service somehow that would be great.

Clue me in please.

If I'm off base here please tell me what instances would be suitable for using the remote service. Is it mainly for use on a LAN?

The Remote Service can be used to add features or speed to any existing, working profile. It cannot replace the connectivity. It works with any existing connection, whether FTP or LAN or VPN or anything. The features of the Remote Service are documented on this page:

OK, so where do I get the name of the remote computer from?

I have a profile set up using FTP so where does that come from? Maybe it will become clear once I actually set it up once. I have read the page you posted the link to but still don't get it.

You don't need a name for a remote computer. That field is left blank. If you read closely, it says: Computer Name (if remote). But it is usually not remote, because the control panel is running on the same computer as the Remote Service itself. So the control panel is used to control the local "ExtremeSync Remote Service".

Now I'm really confused since I'm trying to connect to a remote computer.

So, I have one computer sitting in front of me.
I have another computer sitting somewhere in another city.
They are both connected to the internet by an always on connection.
I have files on the local computer I want to end up mirroring on the remote computer.

Can I use the remote service to do this and if yes how do I tell them to connect to each other?

You need to use FTP to do this.

The Remote Service can not help much. The only thing it could do is unzip files for you, or maybe speed up building the file listing.

The Remote Service is not "connected to". The Remote Service only processes files on the computer where it is installed. For example, when Superflexible wants a file listing, it puts a "listing request file" in the base folder. For example via FTP. The Remote Service sees the listing request file and processes it. There is never a direct connection.
