Minor problem with 8.3 filenames

Postby rossmcm on Wed Aug 03, 2011 4:31 pm

I created a profile to replace an image backup I had previously been using various means to back up. I made the SFFS profile point to the same folder and ran it. It backed up the files on the left that had changed, but also some that hadn't. I discovered then that these particular files were backed up every time. All the files are called xxxxxx~1.xxx -i.e. they are 8.3 names.

The reason seems to be related to this:

At some time in the dark past, I must have used a tool to back up that didn't know about long filenames. So I must somehow have ended up with both the long name and the 8.3 name. I think the problem is due to SFFS can't see README~1.TXT on the right side and so copies it across. Windows helpfully identifies README~1.TXT as ReadMeNow.txt for some reason and creates that file.

There is still no file called README~1.TXT on the right side, so it will be backed up the next time, and the next, and....

I thought I had figured out what was going on, but I can't explain it exactly. Whatever, it's not a biggie, and not really a bug, I just thought it was worth posting in case anyone else has had this and wasn't aware why it occurs.

Cheers,
Ross
