Deleted files

Postby chrfal on Fri Feb 11, 2011 8:33 am

How can I set up SuperFlexible so that erased files on one side gets erased on the other side instead of being copied back.

Please see http://www.superflexible.com/docs.htm.

Additional info should be given if you choose the "Real-Time Synchronization". In that case, the deletions must be enabled on the Real-Time Sync dialog.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply!

I have some problem with getting the feature Smarttracking to work correctly. It wont handle my file deletions properly. I want it to run in unattanded mode but I receive an error message in the "last run / status" box:

"Nothing to be done, deletions disabled: see Safty settings."

In the "unattended Mode" under "Safety" I´ve marked the "File Deletions Allowed".
I´m using SmartTracking "Fully Automatic" under "Moved Files" and "Delete Permanently" under "Deleted Files"

Still I get the error code?

What should I do?

Hello,

on the tab sheet Safety->Unattended, you must uncheck the last checkmark (Special Safety).

In addition, the program will never delete all files. Some files must be left for security reasons - even if you specify 100% for deletions.

I'm having the same problem. Syncing both directions. Using Smart Tracking. Moving deleted files into a special folder on both sides. Doing sync in real time. Have followed all the instructions in this thread, including marking file deletions allowed on the safety tab and unchecking "special safety" (that really should be documented somewhere). Still, deletes will not occur. I get the following in the log file:

This run is based on real-time folder monitoring information.
0. 2/26/2011 4:41:45 PM DEL L wdidle3.zip

0. Source file no longer exists but real-time deletions are disabled: C:\Documents and Settings\Bruce\My Documents\wdidle3.zip

I'd say the paranoid focus on "safety" makes the product difficult to set up (and generates extra questions for support). I would like to see all of the deletion "safety" settings in one tab. Its rather silly to have to set redundant options in at least 3 different places - so far. There must be yet another one I've missed. Where is it?

(And - since I'm evaluating this as a primary backup solution for both home and my small business, I'm curious as to what the "safety" issue is. Under what conditions can an entire folder, or network share, or even all of My Documents, totally disappear by accident? For instance, if one syncs to a local NAS for backup as I am doing, and the NAS goes offline, will SuperFlexible try to delete all the files it now can't find on the NAS? Any other ways of massively deleting through an accidental sync delete?)

Thanks

Hello,

you need to click on the Real-Time Synchronization checkbox once more, even if it is already checked. You will get to the Real-Time dialog. There, you need to enable deletions for real-time.

The user may have deleted or renamed it. In addition, when you use FTP or other Internet Protocols, there is a slight chance that due to communication or compatibility problems, an existing folder might not be seen.

For instance, if one syncs to a local NAS for backup as I am doing, and the NAS goes offline, will SuperFlexible try to delete all the files it now can't find on the NAS?

No, it will error out and not run the job.

Thanks. We're still not quite there. When I specifically delete a file, it goes away on both sides. However, temp files are not being deleted, and are being replicated on both sides. For instance, if I create a new folder which is immediately renamed, I wind up with two folders on both sides, the renamed folder and New Folder also.

I have a slight delay (2 minutes) on deletes. Do I need to get rid of this?

Since I am syncing to the NAS locally and not using FTP, I assume I have no problems with "unseen" folders causing a mass delete, or any other delete issues (other than those caused by my own clumsy fingers).

Thanks.

Yes if you sync in two ways you probably need to make the deletion delay zero. In addition, I'm not sure if the NAS device will send any real-time notifications at all, so you may be better of with a regular sync such as every 5 minutes or so.

Is there any way I can tell if the NAS supplies the necessary real time notifications? It is a Synology DS211. If not, we actually have no need for "instant" real time sync. Once an hour, plus logon/logoff will be adequate in most cases. If I need to force a sync sooner than an hour, can that be done easily?

If I get rid of real time sync, is there anything else I need to do to insure that deletes still happen?

Thanks again
