PST Backups

Postby vince77 on Fri Mar 18, 2011 2:35 pm

Hi -

I installed ExtremeSync Remote Service Control Panel on my remote system that houses a couple PST files that I am testing for backup purposes. My main computer is running the latest SFFS and I set it up so that it does partial file backups.

However, I keep getting errors when I try to backup the PST files that are currently open in outlook. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the remote system:
"Last Action: Error The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file.: C\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\VM Contacts.pst

On the server:

Hi,

for this purpose, you must install the synchronizer on the computer where the original PST files are stored. Then you don't even need the Remote Service on the other end, but you can optionally use it to generate the MD5 checksums for each partial update. See also http://www.superflexible.com/partial.htm.

I installed it based on the Instructions for Mode 2. So if i have to backup pst files on more than 1 computer, i have to installed the synchronizer on each of those computers?

Also, does that mean i have to setup a profile to run the backup for each computer?

I installed it based on the Instructions for Mode 2.

Which is fine, except that Mode 2 cannot handle open/locked files.

Yes.

Well, a profile is needed on each computer. Nothing is needed on the server.

Ok so I understand this correctly, each computer will in essense be doing their own backups? Is there no centralized way to do this?

If I had to restore a pst file i would have to run the restore wizard from the computer housing the pst file?

No, because of the locked files. The technology to access locked files does not work over the LAN. Maybe at one point in the future it could be implemented, but not very soon.

There is a centralized monitoring tool, however. It's in the app, under File->Monitoring Tool. It can monitor all the various schedulers that run on all the machines.

You could, but you might just as well grab the file with Windows Explorer and copy it back (unless it's zipped or encrypted).
