Standard copying and smart tracking

Postby Ivangelion on Mon Apr 11, 2011 3:36 am

Hello,

Is there a performance difference between those two? If yes, how much?

We are planning to use FTP with bi-directional real-time monitoring. Referring to the document, it said,

If filename encoding can't be used and you need to do a bidirectional synchronization, there is still another option. You can use SmartTracking, which can remember the timestamp that the server assignes to the files when they were uploaded. That way, it can recognize if the files have been changed or not, even if the timestamp is not identical to the one on your computer. For this, please choose the SmartTracking operating mode on click the Configure button. Go to the Options tab sheet and choose "Detect Unchanged Files" for the online side. Uncheck the other option "Also Ignore File Sizes" which rarely needed.

What does the "online side" mean in the above quote? the FTP server side?

Thank you in advance.

Real-time only works for uploading to FTP, not downloading. FTP servers do not send real-time notifications. Therefore, you need to schedule a regular sync such as every 5 minutes or so.

Is there a performance difference between those two?

Could be, because the SmartTracking database needs to be maintained. It depends on how many files you have. You need to try it.

You also need SmartTracking to detect deleted files, and to detect on which side files have been moved, if they have been moved into a different folder, for example. If you don't delete or move files, you can use Standard Copying.

What does the "online side" mean in the above quote? the FTP server side?

Yes. But I really hope you don't need this option. It would be much better if your FTP server could accept the original files' timestamps via MFMT or MDTM. Please try it. If it doesn't work, please install a more modern FTP server software.
