Sync Files from PC to NAS

Postby jimlenz on Sat May 14, 2011 3:53 pm

I just installed my NAS and ftp'd my files. I downloaded your program and setup to mirror left with right. I will update files on my pc and want to make sure that they are updated on the NAS.

The problem is that when I run the program for my pictures, videos, or anything else, the files names are the same, as is the bytes but the dates are the same so it wants to recopy everything from the left to the right. Since I didn't initially use this tool to copy the files over I assume that is the problem. How do I have the program not copy everything over because the dates are not the same?

Thanks

Jim

Unfortunately the original dates and times often get lost when copying files via FTP. Some FTP servers do not support keeping the timestamps at all. Some clients also won't even try to send the original "Last Modified" date. Superflexible will try to send the timestamps if the server supports it, but it can't adjust the files that are already on the server.

There are various ways to handle this situation.

If you use Exact Mirror mode, you could click on the "Configure" button and then remove the checkmark "Overwrite Newer Files". This is probably the best method for one-way syncs.

Another way would be to use a date/time filter to handle only files since today's date. However this may not be desirable, because you may be going to move/rename or add older files in the future and want these changes to be included in the backup. Also it will only solve the problem if Superflexible is able to send the timestamps with future uploads.

You could also use the SmartTracking operating mode, and on its Configure dialog, choose the settings for Deleted Files that you need, plus on the Options tab sheet, choose "Detect Unchanged Files On The Right-Hand Side". After this, the database needs to be filled so that the program can remember the currently existing timestamps. To do that, run the job in attended mode and change the Sync Preview so that no actions will be performed (for example click on Show: Unaffected in the top left corner). Then click Start and the database will be filled.
