Help with backing up a remote PC via ftp to NAS???

Postby Wolters on Tue May 24, 2011 3:10 pm

Hi,

I have a remote PC running Windows and Super Flexible. At home I have a QNAP NAS TS-419P behind a D-Link Router (DIR-655), and the router has a fixed ip-adress on the Internet.

On the NAS I have activated the ftp service and also checked the ftp with SSL/TLS (explicit).

On the router I have enabled ftp in the Virtual server list and opened port 21 with TCP-protocoll (I could choose between TCP, UDP, Both or Other). And I have told the router to forward incoming packages to the NAS LAN ip-address (it is a fixed LAN ip-number).

On the remote PC I have set up Super Flexible on the right side to use FTP as Protocoll. The Library option is set to 1 (default). (Though I do not know the meaning of this!!!).

The url is: ftp:// + my ip-adress to my router.

Port number is set to 21, but I do not know if I should use passive mode or not????

In the folder path I have defined the folder on the NAS as: /FTP_FOLDER

And I have also provided the login information.
Under the Security tab I have checked Explicit TSL and the Version SSL v2/3.

Now when I run the profile it will not work and I get an error message saying that "FTP Exception (5): EclSocketError Socket error 10060"

Any suggestions on how I can get this to work? Thanks!

Unfortunately setting up an FTP server behind a router can be difficult. In this case, there are still routing problems. I think you will not be able to use Passive Mode. Passive Mode will use a lot of random port numbers, all of which need to be forwarded to the NAS. You should be able to specify a passive mode port range in the FTP server configuration. If this doesn't work, you need to turn it off. Unfortunately with Passive Mode off, it depends on the quality of the router on the client side whether FTP transfers will be routed correctly.

Thanks,

In the feature spec for my QNAP NAS TS-419P they have a long list of other abbreviations... Will any of these be better than ftp???

File Server

•File Sharing Across Windows, Mac OS and Linux/ Unix Platforms
•Protocols: CIFS/SMB, AFP(3.2), NFS, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS
•QNAP Web File Manager
FTP Server

•FTP over SSL/TLS (Explicit)
•Max Concurrent Connections: 256
•FXP Supported
•Passive FTP Port Range Control
•FTP Bandwidth & Connection Control
•Unicode Support
Web Server

•HTTP/ HTTPS Connections
•Supports WebDAV Connection
•Support Virtual Host
•Importable SSL Certificate

Or is there another way of backing up remotely to my QNAP NAS which will be better and more secure?

WebDAV is much easier for routing. It simply works over the HTTP port 80.

Note that if you upload files, the server will not retain the original "Last Modified" date. If you need to retain that, you need to choose the Filename Encoding option in our software.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply!

And I am sorry that I have to bother you again to make this work as well as possible!

On the QNAP NAS I have a couple of options under "Activating Webserver"

1. Portnumber: (default is 80, so I guess I do not change that)
2. Register_Globals (ON or OFF)
3. Secure connection (SSL) (ON or OFF) with Port number: 8081 (can be changed)
4. Activate WebDAV (I guess that this should be on).

After setting up this correctly I guess that I will have to open port 80 or equivalent to above in my D-Link Router? And if setting the Secure Connection to on on my NAS, do I have to open port 8081 in my router as well?

In Super Flexibel:

On Right hand side: Internet Protocoll settings
Protocoll: WebDAV
Library: 1 (MS SSL)???
URL: the ip-number to my router only? Or should I add the port number as well, i.e. xxx.xxx.x.xxx:80 ??
Authentication: ??? Basic or Auto ???

Thanks!

At first you should try without SSL and then you need only port 80. You do not have to specify it in Superflexible. You should keep the library setting at 1 and Authentication: Basic.

If you use zipping and encryption for the files, you may be OK without SSL.

By the way, it was missing from your above list, but if the NAS provides SSH, that would be the best option and much better than WebDAV because the protocol provides encryption. It uses port 22. Maybe you can try it with a local connection first before setting up your router for it. Our software supports SSH with SFTP, so the device would have to support both. It's worth a try.
