Problems choosing a custom location cfg file

I'm using v5.48 and get completely lost in changing the location of the preferences file. In older versions I could easily choose a location for .ini files, but now I get a lot of hustle with .cfg files the program creates but that I can not choose (can only choose .ini files). But .ini files I cannot create.

What is the proper way to change the location of preferences files?

It seems that this is currently broken. I will fix it in the next update.
