How do I restore mirrored drive?

Postby jpgw2qq on Mon Nov 07, 2011 11:58 am

I am using SFFS on a trial basis to see if I can use it to replace Acronis True Image, which has recently caused me enormous grief when I needed to completely restore a damaged drive.

I have created an exact mirror of my desktop's internal drive on a USB-connected drive. If my internal drive were damaged, how would I use the mirror do a complete restoration, or am I limited to restoring individual files and folders. I don't see the complete restoration process explained anywhere.

Thanks.

Thanks for trying our synchronizer. It is not currently intended as a replacement for imaging tools such as Acronis. We don't have a simple way to restore a bootable drive. In fact, only the latest version 6 (beta) can make identical copies of a bootable partition (i.e. the C: drive), but this is still in a testing phase.

The original purpose of the synchronizer is to back up data, not Windows itself or installed programs.

To restore from a USB-connected drive, you first need some bootable Windows installation so you can run the synchronizer. So for many users, that's not feasible. I still need to explore if it can be run off a bootable Windows PE DVD.

What might be feasible is making an external copy, and if the internal hard drive dies, exchange the drives physically. I.e. put the former external drive into the computer. Still, you may need to use a Windows installation DVD to actually make it bootable.

All this might be going to be easier in a future version, but currently backups of system drives are somewhat outside the scope of this tool.

as we are discussing about restore mirrored drive so i want to share something. But i don't know whether it would help you fully or not. You may discover that you need to restore a file for a Client that is not on the Data Repository hard drive, but on a Mirror drive. This can be done, but it is very important that the process does not interfere with the regular Backup for Workgroups installation and backups. We recommend following the steps below to create a separate installation of Backup for Workgroups that will will be immediately uninstalled after the restore process is complete:

Create a new Data Repository Manager that will use the Mirror drive as the data source
Create a Client that will restore the files of interest
Remove the new Data Repository installation
