Syncing two computers

Postby StMartin81 on Thu Nov 24, 2011 8:15 am

Hello,

I have the following setup:
o host computer is running Windows 7 in a network domain
o guest is a Windows XP virtual machine not connected to the domain

The ideal setup for me would be running Superflexible on the host and to sync files with the guest when the guest is available. I can't share folders from the guest with the host because they are not on the same domain (sharing folders from the host with the guest works).

Is it possible to setup something like this:
o initial setup
o install remote service (on the guest machine, optional: should have a username and password)

o create new profile (on host):
o select local folder on left hand side and remote folder on right side
o connect to remote service to list watched folders and select one of the listed folders (guest is accessible by IP address)
o when the profile is created to run in Real-Time Sync mode the the services should notify each other if a file has been changed, so that the host doesn't have to poll the guest for changed files

Regards
Martin

The main software must be installed on the machine that has access to the other one. You won't need the remote service. Real-time notifications will be sent between the machines by Windows.

The remote service cannot help much because it does not provide connectivity. It communicates via files in the file system, and the connectivity must already be there.

However, I do believe it will be possible to share folders from the guest to the host. You just need to share them and when entering the IP in Windows Explorer on the host system, specify a local user account from that is valid on the guest. You can also enter these credentials in the job in Superflexible.

Hello,

you were right, it is possible to share folders between the guest and the host. I'm not using the ExtremeSync Remote Service anymore.

When I create new files they are correctly synchronized between on either side.

Problem now is that when I delete files they won't be deleted on the other side. When I run the profile manually in unattended mode the files are correctly deleted. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

Best regards

Yes, real-time mode has a separate checkmark for deletions. Please click on the Real-Time checkmark once more, even if it is already checked. A dialog will appear where you can configure the deletions. There's also an optional safety delay which you may want to set to 0.

Hello,

now the deletion works but only on one side. My local drive is a Truecrypt drive and when I modify files on the Truecrypt drive SuperFlexible doesn't recognize that the files have changed. Is this a known behavior?

I think TrueCrypt drives may not send the required real-time notifications. So you need to switch to regular synchronization every X minutes and let SmartTracking handle the deletions.

We also found a bug that could cause real-time events to be ignored by one or more profiles. This has been fixed in version 5.60a.
