Help with extreme Slowness

Postby sriasana on Fri Dec 16, 2011 1:00 am

Here in rural Central America we are allocated an upload speed of about 350kbps. We are just starting to upload to Google's cloud, and the database file for iNotePad consist of thousands of files.

Besides a few dozen of files that get the (400) Google storage error, and we do not know what to do with them yet, the upload slowed down from 340kbps the first hour to literally right now 700B/s = 5.6kbps. FileSynchronizer indicates that the 18GB file will take some 27 hours.

BTW, we checked our speed during the upload and it is excellent for our location.

This file is of great importance, because it contains one of our knowledge bases shared by several co-workers. We are anxious to have it save, but the errors are worrisome.

Furthermore, should a restore need arise, the files need to be put back in a mirrored order or the entries will be ordered alphabetically instead of by the topic the way they were entered.

For instance, when we look at the file in 'finder, we need to right-click to open in Show Package Content, and we see the files alphabetically in Folder carrying the name of each heading. Each folder contains a rtfd file and a hidden file .index_iNP. We mention this to emphasize the need for a backup that mirrors the original.

If you could suggest how we can increase the backup speed and ascertain that we upload and store in a manner that can be restored without problems.

Thank you kindly.

The only thing you can do is choose a larger number of files to copy in parallel. The number is specified on the Files tab sheet in the profile. For Google, and such a slow connection, between 3-5 might be OK.

I also recommend exploring other online storage solutions, especially Amazon S3. For pure backup, it might be more efficient.

Thanks for the replies.

On my Lion-run MacBook, when I want to use Super Flexible File Synchronizer Help, help is unavailable..
You suggest to upload files in parallel. From your description I was unable to find the location. SuperFlexible brings up the Profile Overview -- where do I go from there?

When you say "3-5" for Google, are those kbps? Because I do not find many speed complaints for the Google Cloud service, while most complaints concerning slowness are for Google Apps. If you meant kbps, Google is certainly not the right service, because the file is meant to be accessed and changed by several people. We are not looking for merely storage, so Amazon does not seem to be an alternative either?

We have tried iozeta, but they were unable to connect us. Any suggestions?

Thank you kindly.

With 3-5 for Google, I meant the number of simultaneously uploading files. The upload speed itself is not limited.

From the Profile Overview, you need to edit your job. For example by double-clicking on it. Then the profile editor dialog will appear, which is a pretty big window. In the lower left area, you will find a selection of advanced settings categories. Click on "Files" here. Then specify the number of files to copy in parallel in the edit box further to the right, near the bottom. Try 5 files in parallel.

Because every file transfer has some overhead, the only way to make complete use of your bandwidth is to copy several files in parallel.

When Help is unavailable, you need to choose "Show Help in Browser" from the Help menu. If you don't see that, please install the latest version 5.61.

I will try iozeta, but my recommendation is Amazon S3.
