Zero-length files are not uploaded to Google Docs

Postby Alexander on Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:44 am

Hello.

When I set up a profile to upload a folder to Google Docs, zero-length files are not copied resulting in errors like this:
Code: Select all
\fb2lrf_cm\lastlog.log (Error uploading to Google storage (400):  at 00D0216A.Checkpoints: PCSX/DCopy05t)

SSFS 5.63.

Apparently these files cannot be uploaded. You can use the file size filters in the profile to upload only files starting with 1 Byte in size.

Do you mean this is Google Docs API limitation? I can upload zero-length files to GD manually (via docs.google.com WebUI).

I don't know. I will put it on my to do list to analyze this.

One more issue uploading to Google Docs:
The file with 2 ampersands in the file name fails to upload:
Code: Select all
...Developing&managing a successful technology & product strategy.htm (Error uploading to Google storage (400): The entity name must immediately follow the '&' in the entity reference. at 00D0216A.Checkpoints: FTPWkX/DCopy05t)

There are other issues as well (I sync 100.000+ files, 100+ Gb with GD), but so far I can't see any consistency in them, so I can't describe them properly.

I will look into the ampersand issue. In general it may be difficult to keep so many files in sync with Google Docs because its API makes it extremely difficult and slow to get a complete listing of the items which are already online. You can try it, but I am certain that online storage such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon S3 would be better.

Google Docs seems to be extremely buggy even if using docs.google.com web interface. I'm currently struggling through deleting a lot of files - it seems to take ages until they all get into Trash. So I can't tell for sure when the problem is in SFSS and when in GD itself.
But the price / storage space ratio for GD is the best I know. I currently pay 50$/yr for 200Gb. The same space would cost 400$/yr for Dropbox (which should be split into 2 accounts as well). And for S3, Azure & other services which charge for outbound traffic, besides storage space, the price will be unaffordable for me.

Well, thanks for your suggestion! I reviewed Amazon S3 pricing options & found them reasonable enough for most of my files (which are only uploaded for backup & not downloaded frequently). So I switched to using S3 for the huge archive folders, leaving Google just for photos & Dropbox for current documents (generating most traffic).
So I hope I will no longer bother you with Google Docs questions :)

Thanks! Although I've switched to Amazon S3 already, it may save somebody else some time figuring out why a profile runs with errors.
However, based on my own experience, I strongly discourage anybody from using Google Docs for a profile with more than 1.000 files.
