way to expire file versions?

Postby sfwood on Thu Mar 04, 2010 11:21 am

Hi, I've looked at a ridiculous number of backup/sync tools in recent weeks and SFFS is a real standout. I've seen a useful feature in other tools that I wonder if I'm missing in SFFS, or if it's likely to appear in future. This is, the ability to remove old versions of files saved by the versioning feature after a specified number of days or, if they are in a central folder, after that folder reaches a specified size (oldest files being removed first to make room, like recycle bin). This seems useful, especially the number of days method. Though I haven't seen the following level of flexibility in any product, it would be even more useful to have the number of versions saved change over time(10 versions for 10 days, 3 versions for 200 days, 1 version for 500 days, 0 versions after 500 days, kind of thing). I know the recycle bin is available for local drives, but that is much less flexible.

Also, just curious, what's up with http://www.extremesync.com/ which I've come across with searching?

Thanks
sfwood

Hello,

currently the number of older versions can only be limited by number, not by age. It is likely that new options will be added in the future, although I rarely see storage space as a problem nowadays.

The new Synthetic Backup keeps versions a bit like that, keeping fewer of those versions which are older and more ones for recent revisions. See also http://www.superflexible.com/history.htm.

There is also a way to entertain complete copies in separate folders according to a day/week/month/quarter/year versioning scheme that will keep more versions for recent days/weeks and only one for older quarters, for example. To get this, you would use a destination path with a variable in it such as D:\Backup\$DWMQ. You would not use the options on the Versioning tab sheet in this case.
