auto-syncing doesn't work with auto-mounting network volume

Postby rfehr on Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:43 pm

We just started a 30-day trial of Syncovery for Mac. The software works great, and we're considering buying it, but there's one thing that doesn't seem to be working quite right.

We need to sync between a folder on the Mac (OS X Lion 10.7.4) and a folder on a network drive, which is sitting on a Windows server machine (Windows Server 2003 R2). I have a Real Time Sync profile for this. I want it to be able to mount the network volume on startup/logon and then continue real-time syncing the folders afterwards.

I've tried to get the profile to do this, but haven't been able to figure out how to get it to work quite right. It's strange... right now when I start up the Mac, it does successfully connect to the network volume and sync ONCE. But after that, if I add a file to the Windows server side folder for example, the changes don't sync automatically. I have to manually connect the network volume, then add a file on the Windows server side, and THEN it'll sync the changes.

I've set up the Mount Network Volumes option to connect to the Windows server. Obviously that part is working, since the profile successfully syncs once on startup. But I don't know why it doesn't keep syncing real-time after that. The "disconnect after profile has finished" option under the Mount Network Volumes option is unchecked. I've played around with the profile for a while, trying to get it to work.

Any help in getting this solved would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Mac OS is not able to process the real-time change messages from Windows, so you need to schedule a regular synchronization every X minutes or even seconds.

Between Windows machines it works fine.

The dependency of real-time operation on these change notifications is documented on our web site here:

Thanks for your quick reply.

Hmm here's the thing, though. If I go in Finder and manually connect to the network volume by clicking on it, the real-time syncing works perfectly after that. I can add/remove files all I want from the Windows side, and it'll sync real-time just fine.

Actually, I can even schedule the network volume connection to connect on startup/logon in System Preferences, under the Login Items for the user on the Mac. And if I do that, the real-time syncing works perfectly too. The thing is, for some reason it will always open the network volume in a Finder window, even if I check the Hide checkbox for it in Login Items. I'd like to avoid having that window open up every time I login, so that's why I thought I'd try going with the Mount Network Volume option in Syncovery instead.

So I guess the question is... why does the Syncovery volume mounting work differently than when I manually tell a volume to mount by clicking on it in Finder? If there's legitimate reasons for it, fair enough. But if not, is there any way of getting it to work the same way as manually mounting the volume?

That is interesting. For the time being I recommend that you use the login item. I will have to do some research. There are many different ways to connect network volumes in Mac OS, so maybe some of them enable real-time and some don't.
