With many files, there can be two things that need to be made faster than normal.
One would be building the file listing. This can be slow if you have many folders. If the files are in just a few folders, then it is not an issue. Usually it is sufficient to use the recursive FTP Listing Command LIST -alR to make the listing fast. This can be chosen on the second tab sheet of the Internet/FTP dialog. But if the server doesn't support it, it makes sense to use the Remote Service to generate the file listing.
The other thing is, if you need to transmit many smaller files, then there is some overhead for each file. In part this can be overcome by copying several files in parallel. The number of files to copy in parallel can be set on the Files tab sheet. But if that is still not fast enough, or if you want to save bandwidth by zipping the files, then you can go to the Zip tab sheet and choose "Use ZIP Packages". This can only be used for uploads, not downloads. The ZIP Package Configuration Dialog contains some explanation of the feature. The program would upload zip files and the ExtremeSync Remote Service can watch for incoming zip files and unpack them.
In general, the ExtremeSync Remote Service is a highly specialized item which is used only by a small fraction of our customers. But it has become more popular than I expected.
