HowTo? simple Bitlevel-1:1-Backup /w high compression (SFTP)

Postby Dave_OA on Sat Nov 10, 2012 11:16 pm

Hi,

I appear to be too stupid to get a simple setup to reliably work (files are re-transmitted in full or not unzipped or... or...). What I needed was a 1:1 copy of my files on the server. I guess that was pretty easy in LAN but I have to use SFTP and have a mobile data plan with limited traffic.
That's why I need to know: How would one configure a backup
- using SFTP
- bitlevel backup (partial file updating)
- files are transmitted using max compression
- a real 1:1 backup (i.e. files are in plaintext and unzipped on server)
- no versioning, no syncing, no nothing, just an "Exact Mirror" with the least possible amount of traffic

I simply do not get that to work :(
I've got the "Remote Service" installed and running on the server, configured the unzipper to watch D:\Syncovery\Laptop and the checksummer to watch D:\Syncovery\Laptop and subfolders.

Thank you, Dave

This requirement is not simple at all.

Partial File Updating / Block Level Copying cannot be combined with zipping, unless you want to keep the zip files on the destination. The Remote Service cannot unzip files that use block level copying.

So, for compression you just need to rely on the zlib compression that is built into the SFTP protocol.

Do not use zip compression as a setting in the profile.

For Block Level Copying, you have the choice between two modes as documented on this page:

Thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately not even disabling ZIPs does do a partial update. The original file of 550MB got /deleted/ on server, then it started to upload the full 600MB file.

So with which setup would I come the nearest to the goals
- 1:1 copy with usable files on the server
- least possible amount of data (traffic)

Thank you!

You need to look in the log file why partial file updating could not be used. For example, the first copy it cannot be used because the blocks' MD5 checksums are not known yet. Starting with the second copy, it should work.

Would a 2nd license help?
Some dummy directory on server where 'synthetic backups' were stored by client, realtime watched by server copy of Syncovery and 'syncronized' (unpacked and patched) to my working directory?

Yes this should work. Eventually such ability will be added to the remote service too.

That sounds good!
(How much) would you discount such a server copy? It could be functionally disabled back to only being able to do exactly the described operation.
