Advice on 24Bay DAS to 24Bay Backup on Windows Via Syncovery

Postby xtacbyme on Sun Nov 04, 2012 8:25 pm

Hello all,
I just upgraded and purchased syncovery 24 thread.
Some assistance needed please
I have a 24 bay unit which holds all data for the family that is plugged into my windows server 2008.
On server 2008 all drives are then mapped to a drive i added called My Documents (Drive A) in this folder are my documents, installs, recipe, ebooks etc... And ALSO a folder i named Maps, in the maps folder i made 2 folders (1 Data, 1 Backups)
In the data folder i mapped all the 24 bay drives to it, then in the Backup folder i mapped all 24 drives to that, and plan to setup profles/threads from Maps Data to Maps Backup.

My question with syncovery 24 Thread is there a way for me to backup my Documents Drive A (24bay data system) to the 24 bay backup system WITHOUT it copying the Maps folder.. basically can i have my documents backup to backup drive with an EXCEPTION that states backup everything from my documents EXCEPT Maps folder AND any everything in it.
If so could someone assist me with accomplishing this task? it would be appreciated!
If Not... how would you guys setup my system (Map Location)for ease of use, ease of backing up, ease of finding files on the network, and ABOVE ALL making sure indexing works throughout the network when one searches for files.

Thanks for Your time, and help with this matter... I'm kind of at a stand still here until i figure out a game plan on items mentioned above.

Yes you can do that.

The easiest way is to go to the Masks & Filters -> Exclusions and type

Maps

as an Exclusion. This will exclude any folder called Maps anywhere within your hierarchy.

If that is too much, you can specify it as a path so that only this one Maps folder is excluded. For example, if the Maps folder is at the top level within your profile, you can type:

\Maps

That will exclude Maps only on the first level of the hierarchy being synced.

Cheers,
Tobias

Works ty!

few more questions if i may :)

1. is there any possible way for me to Spin down(safely remove hardware) each drive as it's backed up? so that once the profiles have been run I can just go over to 24 bay unit, and hit the power switch, without being in fear of one of the drives still spinning during power shutdown?

or maybe an option to auto start (power on) the 24 bay unit, run the profiles, then auto power down the 24 bay unit?

2. on one my drives (my docs where maps are located) i'm getting this error every time i run my profiles. why doesn't it copy these 2 files automatically? why do i have to run in attended mode to get the red error to go away?

3. Deletions Disabled, See Log file? ive done all profiles the same... idea on what this could mean?

Thanks for your time and advice.

You may be able to use an external program to spin down the drive. You can invoke external commands from the profile in our software using "Execute before/after" on the Job tab sheet.

To be able to copy the files that are giving you "Access Denied", you may have to install the scheduler as a service. Or if you start the job manually, you may need to invoke the GUI by right-clicking its icon and choosing "Run As Administrator". More information on the service scheduler can be found here:
http://www.syncovery.com/documentation/faq/service/

Concerning "deletions disabled", as it says you need to read the log file. It will contain specifics. There can be a number of reasons why the job runs without deletions. If it does so it tries to protect your files from unintended deletions, and the log file will tell you why it thought this was necessary. The information can be hard to find if the log is long though. It can be somewhere in the middle, at the beginning, or at the end.
