Proper way to back up Exchange 2007?

Postby Warren on Thu Jan 03, 2013 10:37 am

Was hoping someone here with experience could help me. I need to know which files need to be backed up and with which configuration settings in Syncovery to do a complete and restorable backup of Exchange 2007.

Sorry, no, I am not sure. This is a generic file-level backup utility which requires the user to know what to back up.

I highly reccommend looking into a solution that specifically supports Exchange 2007/2010.
We use Microsoft DPM (System Center 2012) for our Exchange backups.

The solution needs to support VSS (specifically Exchange's VSS writer)... if Exchange is not properly supported there is a possibility that you could corrupt the datastore and cause yourself a really big problem.

You may be able to script the Exchange VSS writer to take a snapshot then use another tools to take the backup from the VSS Snapshot. Honestly, I would just find a tool that supports Exchange backups natively and go with that. Is it really worth your job to save a few dollars? If you corrupt the Exchange DB and/or cannot restore a backup you job will definately be on the line.
