Slow Backup via SFTP

Postby cateyed on Mon Jun 17, 2013 5:02 am

Hi there,

I have a Windows SBS 2011 Server backing up remotely to a Netgear NAS running SSH.

It's been backing up mostly fine, but I'm noticing one particular folder causing me issues, and I think I've narrowed it down to its size. It is 4GB and has 900+ subfolders and it seems to be taking a long time to do a directory read and then copy the differences. I'm finding that it's timing out a lot of the time just doing a directory read.

I've checked that I have recursive file listing on in the internet tab. I've increased the amount of concurrent files to 10.

It took 3 days to do 3 folders recently, so I've had to stop it.

The folders themselves aren't massive in size, but there would be a fair bit of difference overall, because it hasn't backed up fully in months now.

Other backups from another server are very fast and are completing, so I don't believe it's a speed/internet situation, and other smaller backups on this server are completing.

Can you please advise me what are the best/fastest settings for SSH or SFTP and any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I turned off zipping/encryption for this particular backup to make it faster as well.

Thanks

Max

I think you need to uncheck the recursive listing. It will still take a lot of time but certainly not days.

Also you can use the checkmark "Cache Destination File List" on the Special tab sheet to avoid having to read the folders from the NAS every time.

Thanks for those tips. I've changed those settings, and I'll let you know how I go.

Does it make much difference with the speed if I choose SFTP, SSH or SCP for the protocol?

No, SFTP is best.
