DON'T copy File permissions (syncing library files)

Postby surphaze on Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:59 am

Hi,

I just started using SFFS and I love the features. Thinking about using it for an online backup. At some point.

For now I'm trying to use it to synchronize library files between different users on one computer.

At the moment I have it set so on each user account, a 2-way-sync is done, syncing the library file to a folder in the "shared" user folder.

For example:
user_A:
sync those two folders:
HD/Users/user_A/Library/Calendars
HD/Users/Shared/SFFS_Sync/Calendars

user_B:
sync those two folders:
HD/Users/user_B/Library/Calendars
HD/Users/Shared/SFFS_Sync/Calendars

And so on for Application Support/AddressBook, 1Password, some preferences, etc

The point would be to have the same settings available for different users. Now my problem is that the file permissions get copied with the files and after user_A has synced his data with the shared folder, user_B can not access it.

Is there a way to make sure that the file permissions stay read and write for all data in the shared folder?

Maybe I'm just missing a setting where I can choose to NOT copy the file permissions, or something?

Thanks for any help / tipps!

Best,

Hello,

I will add a checkbox to the next update where you can turn this behavior off.

That'd be great, thanks a lot!

I have found a workaround, I'll post it here in case someone needs it before the next version comes:

I created a sync partition and told my system to ignore file permissions on this volume (easiest way to do this is probably via the get info dialog in the finder).
Now each user uses sync profiles to sync a library folder to one with the same name on the sync partition. As the permissions on the sync volume are being ignored, it's made sure that every file has read and write permissions of the corresponding user when it's copied to their directories.

Hello,
the new version 4.93a is now available and it adds new checkboxes to the tab sheet Files->More so that you can turn off copying the owner and permissions with the files. This means the files will get the default permissions from MacOS. Whether or not these fulfill your requirements is another question! I think your workaround might be the best solution to your use case.

Great. Your fast and flexible ;-)

I got to that point as well. Actually I will do both, set the new flag and still use the permission-free volume. I could of course as well run a script to edit the permissions afterwards but the way I do it now, it actually works extremely fast and it's relatively easy to set up. Plus I can sync as many user accounts as I want with the same syncing profiles.

I still appreciate the option to turn off permission copying. I will now get all files on my sync partition with standard user rights which makes them easy to access when I for example create a new user and copy them with an admin account. It's definitely the "clean" solution this way:-)
