Maximum Password Length?

Postby Scott on Tue May 04, 2010 6:53 am

When using competitors of SFFS, I have had to deal with undue hassle trying to figure out the maximum password length accepted for the creation of encrypted archives. The SFFS help file does not specify what it is, so I am asking here.

All too often, what happens is that I copy/paste a very long password, only to have the program's interface silently truncate the password. Then I, not knowing that the password was truncated, attempt to decrypt the files using the original password--and it fails. And even once I realize that the password was truncated, I don't know to what length, so I have to experiment over and over and over to figure it out.

So...

What is the maximum password length that may be used with SFFS for creating encrypted archives?

It's 63 ASCII characters. If you use foreign characters, the length that can be stored varies due to UTF-8 encoding.

Do the latest versions of Syncovery v7 and v8 still have this password length limitation of 63 characters?

Sorry for resurrecting a thread from 2010, but 2018 Syncovery's help file still stated that 63 character limit:

The password phrase should be longer than normal passwords since it is used to generate an encryption key. However, the maximum length that can be saved in a profile is currently 63 characters.

I'm glad that updating Syncovery's Help file is in the TO DO list!

Thank you.
