Backups taking toooooo long!

Postby cateyed on Fri Feb 27, 2015 1:27 am

Hi there,

I'm using a standard copy. It starts at 8pm. It starts to copy files at 11AM! More than 12 hours later!

We have the database setup, I can only imagine that it's referencing the database for all this time?
Here is the beginning of the log file:

Code: Select all
Log for profile BACKUP ALL SHARES TO NAS1, started at 8:00:08 PM on 25/02/2015

LEFT: C:\Shares
RIGHT: \\beehive\nas1$\Shares

The profile is executed by the scheduler in a separate thread.

Previous run was at 24/02/2015 8:00:08 PM:

Left Side Volume Name:
Right Side Volume Name:               NAS1BACKUP

Copying Direction : Left To Right

Using reference database in file C:\ProgramData\Syncovery\Database\BACKUP ALL SHARES TO NAS1___3.syncfdb (1419468 Entries)

PART 1

Free Space on left side :      70 GB, needed:    0 Bytes
Free Space on Right side:   5,306 GB, needed:   1,621 MB

Zipping C:\Shares\Company\01 Accounts\01 Purchasing\01 Supplier\SATO\SAU\1433.pdf to C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\Backup 624.28.7924-1671485406.zip
26/02/2015 10:57:45 AM Testing C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\Backup 624.28.7924-1671485406.zip

End of the log file:

Code: Select all
Errors / Access problems with 1 File(s):

\Company\Computer\Scan from Brother\BRN30055C2EA98C_003907.pdf (File or drive/device/network no longer exists)

11:05:39 AM.929 Database performance: AddRecord=13.0s, FindRecord=340.3s, AddAlternatesTicks=2.1s, FindParentTicks=74.7s, OpenFolderTicks=14989.4s
11:05:39 AM.944 Database closed

Reference database closed: C:\ProgramData\Syncovery\Database\BACKUP ALL SHARES TO NAS1___3.syncfdb (1419904 Entries)

What can I do to speed it up? Granted, our files are over 600GB, but it's just crazy! Would it be useful to split the backup into different sections?

Suggestions please!

Hello,
apparently the "Building file list" step is too slow. Luckily, it can be made faster easily. Firstly, make sure you are not using "Cache destination file list" because the database might be too slow for your use case, and it causes the folder scanning to be done in single-threaded mode.

Make sure you have the latest version 7.10. You can increase the number of threads to scan the folders to maybe 20, 50, or even 100. This is done on the Program Settings dialog, tab sheet Performance, or in the profile under "Job".

If the destination is not on the same LAN, you probably need to install the Syncovery Remote Service on a PC that has a fast connection to the NAS so that it can generate the file list fast.

Also, on the Program Settings dialog, tab sheet Advanced, uncheck "Split jobs (to save memory)". I believe splitting the job won't be necessary.

If speed remains an issue, please send a complete log file to support@syncovery.com.

Oh thanks a million for all the tips and the super quick reply! I've upgraded from 7.09 to 7.10 and followed the other steps. Running a backup now, I'll let you know how I go!

Hi there,

OMG that is soooo much better! Backups are taking minutes now!

Turning off Cache Destination File list seemed to make the biggest difference for anyone else with the same issue.

Many thanks for the quick response and help!

Great to hear. I hope that we can improve the cache speed in a future update.
