number of files copied simultaneously (default=3). optimum=?

Postby LGS on Thu Jun 25, 2015 3:56 am

Could comeone explain to me what is the reason of copying several files simultaneously ?
This might be useful on a server, but with an USB direct link to a single external hard drive ? (particularly fort big data transfers, once the disk memory buffer is full)

Which are the recomendantions for the various kinds of supports to have optimal transfer rate ? [syncovery sets it to 3 by default it seems]

Thanks

It depends mostly on the file sizes. If you copy many small files, then even to a locally attached hard drives, copying in parallel will speed it up. If you copy large files, it could be better to copy only 1 file in parallel, which would reduce fragmentation on the hard drive.

Copying many small files to some cloud services, especially Amazon S3, may even benefit from copying 10 files in parallel, because each file will have a very small delay due to communication over the Internet. So copying more in parallel will allow you to max out your bandwidth.

Thanks for that quick information !

Two additional [detail level] questions :

Could we imagine that Syncovery knows the the destination type (by guessing it or by the user mentioning it in the profile) and adapts the copying strategy accordingly ?

Could syncovery infer the best copying strategy from the oveview of the list of files to be copied, or even possibly change the parameter dynamically during the copy process (big for small files, =1 for big ones) ? Sorting the order of files to copy by size would help in any way ?

Best regards
