Mass updating configuration Settings?

Postby Spacey on Thu Jan 21, 2010 8:28 am

Hi,
First off I love this software. It's saved me so much time, I often migrating hundreds of website from one provider to another and this tool goes a long way to helping meet my deadlines.

What I'd like to know is there a way I can change options within the profile on mass? I know you have a mass editing tool for user details etc but its the other options I need to change or update the most often. For-instance I regularly create a hundred plus profiles syncing a variety of directories and files but very often I realise I wish to add/change an option like "update Time stamps on remote destination". Unfortunately I can't find a quick way to update that setting across all the profiles.

I've tried mass find and replace within the configuration file but this and other options appear to be handled by the binary section of the config.ini
In an ideal world It would be nice to change any setting on mass or at the very least create one profile say a master and link my 100+ profiles to it as children. Certainly in my case the only options that ever differ between profiles are the source and destination and possible the file exclusion list (which I see is already broken out in the config.ini).

Anyway that's my challenge and any recommendations would be appreciated.

Hello Gareth,

thanks for your comments and suggestions!

Improvements in this area will certainly be made. Currently the Multi Edit Tool just contains a few settings that some customers needed specifically. Ideally it would contain all the settings, but in the meantime I can add more if you tell me exactly which ones you need. I'm not sure which timestamp setting you meant.

I also intend to have a more human editable configuration file. Possibly the profiles will be using an SQL database and/or XML in version 5 or soon after. That would give power users more control.

Hi Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The options I'm currently trying to enable on mass is located under:
Right click on Profile Select Edit profile
Click Comparison => More => The select/unselect "Adjust Folder Time Stamps".

I'm also half way through manually updating the "Binary Comparison" option located under the same location.

On another note: I've just noticed a possible bug within the version v4.48 build 302.
When I create a new profile and specify "Cache Destination File List" found under "Special" and then look under the Database tab I can see the "Database Contains Paths Relative To" LEFT PATH & RIGHT PATH are correct based on what was previous set for the LEFT & RIGHT Synchronization paths. If I save this profile everything works ok.

However, If I now reedit the profile update the Synchronization Paths to a new directory for LEFT & Right. Change the Name of the profile to a new name (this inherently is how I create all of my profiles as I said before for me it's rare that my main option ever change) and select "Save AS" I get the normal dialog "The Profile name was change. Would you also like to keep the profile under the old name" I click yes and ok on the next screen confirming the new name. If you then go edit your new profile and go back to the Database Left & right Paths under Special => Database. You should find the "Database Contains paths relative to" Left & right haven't updated. They'll still be set to previous profile paths. I'm guessing but as these paths are incorrect I'd expect the db not to monitor the paths correctly.
Anyway hope I've given enough information to reproduce this fault.

Also I'd just like to add a word of caution towards your previous reply. Whilst I welcome the news of a more editable configuration source, one of the advantages of SFFS to me and possible other users is the portability of the application. When working on Live production servers the advantage of not having to run an installer or install third party components is paramount. If you move to a SQL based db I'd be worried that I'd need to install SQL libraries/components to make SFFS run or worst still the requirement to open up my firewalls etc to allow connectivity to the SQL database server.

Apologies for such a long reply appreciate your time thus far and going forward.

Hi,

I will add these options to the Mass Edit. Yes I noticed that the database paths were not behaving ideally for duplicated profiles and it will be better in the next version.

Don't worry about the SQL - it will be embedded into the program, i.e. there will be no separate process running, no installation, nothing. Just one additional DLL file in the Superflexible Program Files folder. No configuration, nothing, just speed and reliability improvements as well as smaller database files. From the user's point of view, there will be no difference except for these improvements.

The program communicates only with this DLL by direct function calls, so there is no interprocess communication, no TCP/IP, nothing. No firewall will notice anything.

The database I am going to use is Firebird, and you can use it as an embedded DLL, or as a full blown SQL server. There is a nice feature chart here:

Cheers,

Hi Tobias,
That's sounds great! Please let me know if you require help beta testing any of the new options. I'd be glad to help where I can.

In today's update v4.89, the two settings "Binary Comparison" and "Adjust Folder Timestamps" are part of the Multi Edit Tool.
