"ERROR 5 Access is denied" error

Postby fallingman on Thu Jul 22, 2010 9:54 am

Please can someone tell me how to get round this error?

* ERROR 5, Access is denied

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate backing up files from hard disk to a USB hard drive, nothing fancy.

If I run Exact Mirror mode, and tell SFSS to delete files on the right-hand side (USB hard drive), I get this error when it tries to delete the flagged files, yet I can delete files manually in Explorer on the USB hard drive, so I don't see how it's a permissions problem?

I've turned off Search Indexing on the USB hard drive too.

This is really annoying me as it's spoiling an otherwise excellent program!

Any help much appreciated...

Thanks,

Andy

On further analysis, this seems to have something to do with which account is deleting the files - an account that belongs to the Users group within Windows 7 only has basic read rights to a file, so therefore can neither create nor delete (modify) a file.

Changing the file permissions manually on a file to allow this group to have Modify rights to that file enables SFSS to delete the file properly - this makes no sense to me, since I am logged on with full Admininstrator rights as part of my account, so why does SFSS not inherit MY rights?

Please can someone explain - I know permissions and rights are somewhat confusing since Vista / Windows 7!

Does SFSS use another account, e.g. "Guest", and if so, which one?

Thanks,

Andy

Windows UAC (User Account Control) makes you a very limited user even if you are logged on as an administrator. For that reason, you sometimes need to run the program by right-clicking its icon and choosing "Run As Administrator". Then you will have all your rights. Alternatively, you can modify the security settings for the folders and files so that this is not needed.

For scheduled jobs, you should install the scheduler as a service and then it will not be hindered by UAC. For more details, please see http://www.superflexible.com/docup.htm.

Thank you - this looks like it will work.

Should've known it was UAC causing all the problems!

Thanks again,

Andy
