Tricky versioning request! Is it possible?

Postby Wolters on Sun Jul 25, 2010 6:32 am

Hi,

I am helping a small company with their backup using Super Flexible, and I was asked if the following scheme would be possible.

On the left we have a folder containing a file that is changed now and then. This file they would like to be backed up to a second folder BUT preserving versioning in the following manner.
On the right the would like to have one folder containing a MONTHLY version of the above file for the last three months, and ONLY the last three months, the fourth month version should be deleted as soon as the new month is added. Preferably the filename should ONLY have the DATE extended to it original name, i.e. "filename 2010-01-01", "filename 2010-02-01", "filename 2010-03-01".

I have seen in the manual that you can use Versioning / Filename mangling and then get the following "A file named Invoice.doc becomes Invoice.d20061216-t121650.doc on the right-hand side". BUT is it possible too ONLY get the DATE in order to get the filename more legible???

OK, so I guess you could consider this as a future feature request! :) Especially if you have long filenames and you would like to add versioning to these. I could even think of times when I would be happy just adding a "counter" at the end of the filename as in: "verylongfilename001", "verylongfilename002", etc

Yes a counter can be added by choosing "Keep multiple versions" without Filename Encoding. But not if the destination is FTP.

If you keep 12 months then you could use variables in the right folder path like .......\$MONTH\$DAYOFMONTH You could maybe turn on zipping and this would save a little space since you would be using a little more due to the extra months.
