"Dropbox-like" Personal Server

Postby adrianofgomes on Thu Sep 23, 2010 9:28 am

Hi,

I'm using Dropbox to sync files between my home PC, notebook and work PC. It works fine, but the free storage is limited and the paid plans are too expansive for me.

I'd like to make my own "dropbox-like" server with my Home PC connected to Internet 24x7. Can I use SuperFlexible for that? If yes, how it would be?

My main needs are:
1 - Instant updates: when a computer change a file, it's updated to the server and replicated to others computers.
2 - Server must run on port 80 because Work PC only can access this port.
3 - Client must run without administrative privileges because Work PC doesn't have it.
4 - Traffic must be encrypted by https/ssl or something like that.

I don't know if it was sufficient clear... ask any doubts, please.

Thank you for help,

Adriano.

You can set up a WebDAV server and use our software to sync with that. But it cannot work in real-time like Dropbox. Instead you need to schedule regular syncs. They can occur quite often, such as every minute.

Thank you for reply. Some doubts:
1 - Do you recommend some free WebDAV server? Could it be a SVN Server?
2 - How many SuperFlexible licences I'll need?
3 - If the syncs occurs every minute there will be some overhead (traffic, processing, read/write,...)?

Thank you,

Adriano.

Windows comes with built-in WebDAV capabilities as part of IIS. You just need to configure it.

One per computer, but for example the Family Pack is a cost-effective solution.

Yes. You need to try it. It depends on how many folders and files you have. See also the FAQ "Building the file list takes too long" on http://www.superflexible.com/docs.htm.

Because timestamps are lost when uploading via WebDAV, you will need to use Filename Encoding. You may also want to combine it with Zipping and Encryption, especially if you don't set up an SSL certificate on the server.
