ZIP compression not always needed

Postby iconbill on Sat Oct 09, 2010 4:35 am

Hello,

i'm using 'zip to each file' with encryption, so i have some kind of security on my backup drive.

I have 500GB data, 400GB are .NEF/RAW/JPG/AVI files. so off course it takes lot's of time, i think it's gonna take a couple of days before this backup has finished.

Can i make a list of file-extension wich must be zipped, but without compression ? This would speed up my initial backup set?
Is there any kind of way, how i can speed up my initial backup?

ps Personally i have better experiance with 7zip compression, better compression (and free). Would be nice if this could be a selective option as well in the future version.
Kind regards,

On the Program Settings dialog in version 5, you can specify file types not to zip, but then they won't be zipped at all. I don't think the compression step takes a lot of time anyway. You can specify a number of files to copy in parallel on the Files tab sheet - that will really speed it up.

a) the tip about 'number of files to copy in parallel' is indeed a good tip! :)

b) The tab 'types, limits' in 'Program settings' is not listed in the help file (f1). I went to the 'help' because the i needed more information about this text:

'file masks which should not be zipped (unless encryption is also chosen)'

my conclusion: if i choose encryption, this list will totally be ignored. Is this conclusion correct?

c) about 'compression time': i think it must be a lot of difference in time if all
*.nef, *.avi, *.mpg, *.mp3, *.jpg, *.zip, *.rar, *.7z
are just 'stored as zip', instead of 'compress and zip'.
It is waist of the processor time to compress these files, because they are all ready compressed!

d) maybe my anti-virus scanner is also slowing down the process to much. So i want to run a batch-file called 'stop avira.bat' BEFORE the schedule starts and when the schedule stops again run a batch file ('start avira.bat). Is that possible?

Yes.

Yes. Please use the checkbox "Execute before/after" on the Job tab sheet.
