Questions regarding "Synthetic Backups"

Sorry for continuous asking. The explanation of this new function of version 5 only appears on the History page, and it is not comprehensive. Could you please elaborate the following option? Thanks in advance.

- Build all incremental images against the preceding checkpoint (uses more space)

- Checkpoints are relative to:
-- the initial file version
-- the previous higher checkpoint (week/month/quarter)
-- the previous higher checkpoint (maximum distance: month)
-- the previous higher checkpoint (maximum distance: week)
-- the closest preceding checkpoint
(what does "higher", "maximum distance", and "closest" refer to?)

- Thin out checkpoints dynamically
