Remote PC Backup

Postby Stevens3131 on Thu Jan 26, 2012 4:35 pm

I have some clients that FTP remote backups to my off-site storage.

I have a couple of questions:

1. I am looking for a way to monitor the status of everyone's backup. Is there a tool, or method to check these backups (complete, failed, etc.) without actually logging into my NAS and checking the last time something was copied?

2. What are the best settings in SFFS for the fastest file transfer?

3. Are there any best practices to insure the reliability of the backups...I have had a situation where the Scheduler stopped running.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

the most used way to monitor jobs running at different sites is to use the email notifications which you can set up on the Program Settings dialog. You could use a mail filter to have them moved to a special folder in your email client and at the end of the day, you just need to count the emails to check if they match the number of customers, and mark them as read.

Another way would be in the GUI under File->Monitoring tool, but this only works on the LAN or over a VPN. It requires that you can access the remote machine in Windows Explorer with UNC paths such as \\blabla.dyndns.org or \\123.234.123.24.

2. What are the best settings in SFFS for the fastest file transfer?

Usually FTP library number 3 has the highest transfer rates. In addition, you will want to copy several files in parallel. The number can be specified on the Files tab sheet.

It is probably best to install the scheduler as a service. Please see http://www.superflexible.com/docup.htm. As long as there are no issues, you don't need to update the software too often. But if you have any doubts, please install the latest update from our web site.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Where do you choose which library? What is the max number of files that you can copy in parallel?

The library is chosen on the first tab sheet of the Internet/FTP dialog.

You can copy up to 10 files in parallel, but usually more than 5 is not so good with FTP. It depends on your Internet connection and on the server. Many servers allow only 10 connections, and you need one more connection than files being copied in parallel, for internal reasons.
