Windows cancels shutdown due to long lasting profile runs

Postby kuehni1 on Tue Apr 18, 2017 12:48 pm

I have a couple of profiles running regularly and finally with the shutdown of Windows. Some of them need a lot of time, but this was ok for me until Windows introduced a timer cancelling the shutdown (=returning to desktop) if not completed within 20 seconds. I have Windows 10 Pro, version 1607 and Syncovery 7.84a

I tried to give the Windows shutdown timer more time by adjusting the registry settings WaitToKillAppTimeout and WaitToKillServiceTimeout to higher values. Unfortunately, without any effect (I changed also the Syncovery timer type appropriately).

Are there any other ideas, for example a profile running after all other profiles doing nothing else than executing a shutdown command because Windows returned from shutdown screen to desktop in the meantime already?

Hello,
the timeout is actually one minute. After one minute, Windows 10 stops shutting down. I do not know why Microsoft changed the behavior like that. It was fine in Windows 7.

As an alternative, you can choose the shutdown option on the Job tab sheet in the last profile that you need to run.

Even better would be creating a shortcut that you invoke instead of shutting down the machine normally. This shortcut would run your profiles and then shut down.

You can make a copy of an existing Syncovery shortcut (icon) and add command line parameters to the "Target". For example, the target could be:

"C:\Program Files\Syncovery\Syncovery.exe" /RUNX="MyShutDownJobs*" /RUNX="OneMoreJob" /SHUTDOWN

Thanks for the quick response. Before I change my typical shutdown procedure I will try the shutdown flag in a profile.

I have mutiple profiles, which are executed both, periodically and during shutdown. Obviously, none of them should initiate the shutdown during the regular run.

I could add a "dummy" profile with the solely purpose of initiating the shutdown. How I can ensure, that this specific profile will run as the last profile among all others during the shutdown? Or does it not matter, because the shutdown command is only processed after finalization of all pending profiles?
